BIOGRAPHY / HISTORY

Minor White (July 9, 1908-June 24, 1976), photographer and teacher, was born Minor Martin White in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Charles Henry White and Florence May Martin. White attended the Minneapolis public schools, graduating from West High School in 1927 with distinction in science and literature. He entered the University of Minnesota in 1927 and majored in botany, though he also took courses in literature and poetry. It was at this time that White realized he was a homosexual, an aspect of his life that would come to be a prominent theme in his photography. When, in 1931, he failed to meet the degree requirements, he left the university and became a houseman at the University Club. His employment allowed him the time to concentrate on writing poetry, his chief interest. After taking some night courses, he graduated from the university in 1934.

George Martin, White’s grandfather, was an amateur photographer who gave him his first camera in 1915, as well as introduced him to early photographs and photographic processes. Having learned the rudiments of technique by making photo-micrograph slides for the botany department, White took up photography seriously in 1937. In the summer of 1937 he left Minneapolis and settled in Portland, Oregon, where he began his photographic career, both as an artist and a teacher. In 1938 he became a creative photographer for the Works Progress Administration Art Program, documenting the historic nineteenth-century cast-iron facades and buildings that were being demolished along the Portland waterfront. His photographs were exhibited in 1939, and the exhibition toured various national WPA centers until 1942. White was also active in theater circles, making photographs of actors and performances. In 1938 he began teaching photography to young people at the local YMCA. In 1940 he was sent to La Grande, Oregon, to teach at the WPA art center, where he subsequently became its director. In 1941 he returned to Portland, having decided to establish a photography business there. Not long after his return, in February 1942, he had his first one-man museum exhibition at the Portland Art Museum, and in April he was drafted into the army.

In 1943, while stationed in Hawaii, White was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church. This marked the beginning of his interest in religious practices and in Christian mysticism. He photographed little during the war and saw action throughout the Pacific theater, participating in the invasion of the Philippines in 1944. Mostly White wrote poetry during this time, one of which, “Minor Testament,” he would go on to use later in his photo sequence Amputations. He was discharged late in 1945 and traveled to New York, where he enrolled in the Columbia University Extension Division to study art history with Meyer Schapiro. Around the same time he met and became friends with Beaumont Newhall, curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art, and Newhall’s wife, Nancy. With their help White was brought into the mainstream photographic art community, meeting some of the preeminent photographers of the era, such as Edward Weston, Paul Strand, Harry Callahan, and Berenice Abbott. As part of his study at Columbia, White completed his first writing on photography, a work eventually titled “Fundamentals of Style in Photography.” White’s work was never published, but it served as the basis for most of his later writings on the critical and interpretative analysis of photographs.

In 1946 White was invited by photographer Ansel Adams to assist him on the faculty of the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. It was there that White truly began his teaching career, remaining on the faculty until 1953. He then moved to Rochester, New York, and took a position at the George Eastman House, a museum of photography at which Beaumont Newhall was a curator. In 1955 White joined the faculty of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), at first on a part-time basis. He began teaching full time in 1956, after he had resigned from Eastman House to concentrate on teaching. He remained at RIT until 1965, at which time he joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was granted tenure in 1969 and taught at MIT until his retirement in 1974. In addition to teaching, White pioneered in the development of the workshop format, conducting programs for small groups of students in his home and at sites throughout the country.

In 1952, together with a group of others interested in serious art photography, including Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and the Newhalls, White founded the magazine Aperture and became its first editor. The publication was to become one of the most influential forces in the field during the next twenty years, facilitating the dialogue about creative photography and encouraging the wider acceptance of the medium as one of the major art forms of the twentieth century. Aperture maintains its status as the preeminent, highly influential magazine on the field of photography to this day. The majority of White’s writing was done for Aperture, until he resigned his editorship in 1975. White wrote extensively in book form, completing three major manuscripts on the methods of creative photography and interpretation, including one titled “Canons of Camerawork,” though none of his works were published. Although his photographic work was frequently included in exhibitions and represented in photography collections internationally, he produced the first monograph on his photography himself. His Mirrors Messages Manifestations (1969) is an extended autobiographical sequence of images with poetic text. The work accompanied a retrospective exhibition of his photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in January 1970.

White also curated numerous exhibitions, including a cycle of four between 1968 and 1974 at the Hayden Gallery of MIT. These exhibitions—“Light7,” “Be-ing without Clothes,” “Octave of Prayer,” and “Celebrations”—reflected White’s deep spirituality and expressed the religious and esoteric aspects of photography that he championed. Throughout his life, White was interested in the study of comparative religions, including Zen and the Gurdjieff philosophy, and in astrology. He strived to attain monastic simplicity in his life, and he practiced meditation ritual; he incorporated all of these spiritual explorations into his teaching. White died in Boston, leaving no survivors.

White was one of the most important photographers active during the thirty-year period after World War II. He produced an exceptional body of work that derives its significance from his interests in poetry and spirituality. The two additional aspects of White’s career, while fundamentally related to his expressive work as an artist, are also independently significant. One is his work as a writer on photography and as the publisher of an important journal, and the other is his contribution as a teacher. Over a thirty-year period, beginning in 1946, he taught directly and influenced through lectures and workshops several generations of artist photographers, some of whom became leading photographers and teachers, including Robert Bourdeau, Paul Caponigro, Abe Frajndlich, Jerry N. Uelsmann, and John Upton. In 1989 a retrospective exhibition of his work, drawn from his archive, opened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and subsequently toured to museums in the cities where he had lived throughout his career.

DESCRIPTION

Upon his death in 1976, Minor White bequeathed his personal collections of documents and photographic works to Princeton University. Today they form the Minor White Archive, which makes available to qualified researchers items like the following: a trove of letters, annotated books, published and unpublished manuscripts, exhibition information, teaching notes (including audio and video materials), and the artist’s private journal, “Memorable Fancies.” In addition, the Princeton University Art Museum contains the most extensive collection of the artist’s negatives, proof prints, and finished prints, making it the single most significant resource on the artist, author, curator, and photographic educator. Overall, each period of White’s life is represented in the Archive. It is particularly rich in White’s documentation of his mature years, when his photography had reached its apex: those in San Francisco (1946-1953), Rochester (1953-1965), and the years until his death in Arlington (1965-1976). Additionally, where less documentation existed regarding White’s childhood (1908-1929) and his formative years in photography (1937-1947), research has been and will continue to be added.

ARRANGEMENT DESCRIPTION

The Archive is divided into twelve sections of documents and three sections of photographic work. General Correspondence and Family Correspondence are the first two sections of the Archive. Together they consist of correspondence with nearly seven hundred individuals and organizations, amounting to some five linear feet of letters. The third section is Family and Personal Documents, which contains the following: transcripts, certificates, family photographs and health information. The fourth section, Critical Texts and Interviews, contains copies and offprints of critical texts on White as well as interviews with the artist, including interviews on VHS. White’s Library and Research Collection is the fifth section of the Archive, comprising his personal library of annotated books, journals, magazines, files on other artists, and clipped articles. Materials in the first five sections are organized by last names, with the exception of the Family and Personal Documents, which have been largely arranged chronologically. The sixth and largest section of documents in the Archive is the artist’s Activities Files, which include: a full set of Aperture magazines, copies of White’s publications, drafts of approximately forty of these publications, drafts of sixty unpublished manuscripts, exhibition information, notes on photography projects, teaching notes, public lecture notes, slides of other artists’ works, notes and audio tapes of workshops, astrological charts of students and friends, and newsletters from photography organizations to which White belonged. Financial Records and Artifacts comprise the seventh and eighth sections of the Archive, respectively.

The Financial Records section contains print orders, sales receipts, and other personal documents, concentrated on the last years of his life. The Artifacts section contains most of White’s calendars from 1961-1976, his address files, and assorted personal effects. The ninth section contains the nearly one thousand handwritten and typed entries that comprise White’s personal journal, “Memorable Fancies,” the most noteworthy literary component of the Archive, providing the most intimate source of White’s thoughts and emotions throughout his career. The tenth, eleventh, and twelfth sections of documents are the legal papers of the Minor White Estate, Archive Correspondence, and the Archive’s Administrative files, respectively, organized by topic. After that, Miscellaneous Files contain all other materials that are not readily classifiable into the other sections. The final two sections are White’s collections of his own black and white and color works, including negatives, Polaroid prints, proof prints, and color transparencies.
